Social media

Social media is taking over. Almost every organization and company has a profile on a social media site. It’s the cheapest form of advertising and effective public relations.

I too have been sucked in. As part of my internship at the UNLV Newman Center, I will now maintain a blog of events and advertising it on facebook and twitter. I realized this Tuesday after class- that I can meet my marketing objectives as a marketing intern by creating a blog for the UNLV Catholic Newman Center.

It took me a few hours but eventually, I customized my webpage through wordpress and by the end of the day, I had already got 64 hits just from promoting it through social networks and our email database. This method we are learning in class is effective and I hope it draws more awareness to the organization I am representing during my internship.

I am amazed at how effective social media is. I had no clue journalist were using twitter as a source of learning and sharing information. Now that I seek out professionals on twitter, I can learn great resources that come recommended by others in my field. I can also share my knowledge.

It is true that this is the information age. It is so easy to share and learn information.  Word of mouth is said to be the most effective advertising. Well, word of mouth via social networking is also effective.

Almost every company has a facebook account because they know people check their facebook everyday and if they can get in their newsfeed with special offers, that will drive business. Twitter and facebook is so popular, it is also used on the go. People can tweet and update their facebooks through cell phones. That’s the best kind of news, instant news. In a generation that has no patience, social marketing is hot.

Blogs are a way of advertising yourself; what you discover in life and how you want to be portrayed through your thoughts. It’s an open form to create yourself into a masterpiece. You can become a beautiful picture on paper. Time and effort goes into this development and you become an artist.

I want to be an artist of my ideas, yet keep the audience’s attention.

After searching word press themes, I picked the news theme. Although I do not want to be a journalist as a career, blogging is similar to journalism. Blogs need to capture readers by talking about topics that interest them.  The best way to capture different audiences and more readers is to have a variety of topics available at first glance.

The news on the internet has mastered this technique. When you go to most news site, the main page has multiple article blurbs that require readers to click on them to continue reading. This allows readers to read the lead of different articles and topics quickly so they can pick the ones they want to read in more detail.

The same technique is effective in blogs. Since I will not be blogging about a specific topic or interest regularly, using blurbs on my main page will be effective. With traditional formatting for blogs, the newest article is first and readers have to scroll through it before they reach the next. If an article does not interest a reader, you can lose him/her in the middle of the article and he/she may not scroll to the next article.  As a writer, I want to capture them on the topic that interests him/her whether it is the first or last article on my page.

Other characteristics I like about this theme is the picture at the top of the blog. This creative image helps capture readers and give them an idea of what the blog will portray. I also like the white background because it portrays a clean, clear tone.

I sit down and the words begin to stumble over each other until they begin to flow. Flow from my mind to the page and soon I know: this was what I was made to do; to write.  I have been writing poetry since I was 14. I started this as a way to express my thoughts, both negative and positive. I now have over 300 poems I want to publish. I never thought I could be a writer. I used to think it was impossible to write poetry, but when life’s troubles build up inside of you, what else can you do?  To hold it in continues the negative activity in your body. To release it frees you.

In the past year, I have neglected this outlet. I only write poems occasionally; whereas, before I wrote up to three a day. Recently, I have decided to blog as a new outlet. It is more straightforward than poetry, but serves the same purpose.

I have always found creative outlets to express myself. In high school, I was a choir major at Las Vegas Academy, a fine arts magnet school. Throughout high school, I developed many hobbies besides poetry. I participated in five dance performances, did photography, journalism, and played the violin. I would recommend this fine arts school to any high school teens who love the arts. Check it out at the LVA website.

Out of all my creative outlets, writing poetry has been the most constant. Writing has allowed me to develop my skills necessary for my future career. Majoring in journalism, I have learned to write to the point. Although, being a dramatic personality, print journalism does not fit me as a career choice. I do enjoy writing articles for public relation newsletters, but that is as far as this investigative journalist will go… copywriting is more my game.

One day, I want to be in a room with 5-10 other people brainstorming ideas for a product. I thrive off of working in a creative group. Communication is my minor and I think the most creative way you can communicate is through an advertisement. It’s glamorous, yet it speaks the benefits of a product in the brightest light. It makes the audience understand its purpose and what it can do for them. It draws an emotional connection to its target and that is when it becomes effective advertising.

The other part of my major is public relations and this is where most of my experience is in. I did an internship as the press intern with CineVegas Film Festival and learned how to market events to the media and local celebrities. My second internship was with the Catholic Newman Center at UNLV as the marketing intern.

I made a public relations campaign starting with the marketing strategy. I did research through online surveys with the target market to confirm the problem and to vote on the tagline. I enjoyed promoting the events for the Newman Center. I created a blog for upcoming events and articles on past events at UNLVNewman.wordpress.com. I increased the database through personal outreach at events and social networking sites. I also used Facebook and twitter as a means of promoting the events posted on the blog.

With the passion I have for advertising, I hope it never is crushed. I want to make it my career and strive to become creative director. Although, I know workaholics do not live life to the fullest and that is why I want goals outside of my career.

I want to have time to publish and promote my three books of poetry. They are divided into religious poems, painful love poems, and hope filled love poetry for different audiences. Although my poems have been published in multiple collection books, I want to publish a book of my own. Along with publishing my poems, I want to produce a CD with my original songs.

What if along the way I find the advertising business to be cruel and unexpected? What if I never take time to focus on my creative goals outside of work? What if I never travel to the places I want? I know that life will throw me off the road I am planning on, but wherever it leads, I know the unexpected will soon be a place I love. Therefore, I am no longer afraid of change.
