The Perks of Being a Wallflower

Ever feel like you’re a bit different, like you’re missing something that everyone else knows, and kind of makes you feel awkward or unaware? In The Perks of Being a Wallflower Charlie is that awkward kid. He leaves middle school with a the hardship of losing his best friend. But as he starts high school he meets Sam, who quickly becomes his first crush, and Patrick, who becomes a really good friend. Charlie is an interesting character. The novel is a collection of letters to a stranger expresses how he feels and what’s going on in his life. However, the letters are only going one way intentionally. Through the whole book you can tell as the reader that something is off but can never really figure out why. Of course, he’s figuring out who he is as a teenager but he seems a little distant. His friends Sam and Patrick become really close and create a bond only understood as you’re reading. Through his friends, Charlie gets exposed to drugs, alcohol, sex and their consequences, the ‘good’ and bad. He finds out the truth of how some people hide who they are and that not everyone is who they seem. At times he’ll express himself through music whether that be playing the music selection at a party or making mixed tapes. He explains moments with Sam and Patrick in their truck with the right song on as feeling infinite. Even though he’s bit different at some level whoever has felt out of their element or even just pressures of being a teenager can relate to this book. I really don’t want to give too much away because it is a good book and it’s compared to the level of Catcher in the Rye. Exciting news! In 2012, there will be a movie made from this book. The main character will be played by Logan Lerman from Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lighting Thief. Sam will be played by the ever popular Emma Watson who was in Harry Potter. Patrick is not casted or not released yet.

LV Cops Pull It Off At EDC

In the afterglow of the 2011 Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC), Las Vegas found itself still in tact. Los Angeles reporters and officials were skeptical about the city’s ability to maintain order in the face of a drug-wrenched, hormone-crazed audience with no concern for consequence. WARNING:This video contains graphic images and strong language. (And is unsuitable for children!) This scene last year quickly became life-threatening, as the massive crowd continued to push through a small gate opening. The weight of the people left one or more unconscious, and as the video clearly shows, it became bloody for some as well. Las Vegas was fortunate enough to not have experienced anything as terrifying as this scene. Some of that may be attributed to luck, but the majority of it was most likely sound planning. LA WEEKLY blog author Dennis Romero said, “Officials in Vegas keep referring to the city’s ability to deal with large crowds at NASCAR and New Year’s Eve events without realizing that a rave is a wholly different animal.” And according to Romero’s blog, “Dr. Dale Carrison, the EDC’s on-site medical director, told 8 News Now in Las Vegas this: ‘This is what we do in Las Vegas. This is what the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department does with NASCAR and New Year’s Eve and with all of the different events we have downtown and on the Strip. This is what we as a city do and we do it well and I think we are going to do this well.’”

I say KUDOS Dr. Carrison! Not only did you defend Las Vegas resources eloquently and on point, you remained correct. Way to stick to your convictions. LVMPD did a bang up job as they have been doing for decades on the strip every New Year’s Eve like clockwork.

Romero actually LOL’d after Carrison’s statement in his blog, but the fact of the matter is no one died on Vegas’ watch. Additionally, reported drug arrests were vastly lower than those in LA. That either means the media grossly under reported or the police did a fine job. I tend to believe the latter. Although official revenue totals from the event for Las Vegas have been kept under wraps, Last year’s totals for L.A. were just over 40 Million. I don’t know where this “revenue” will be applied, but I indeed hope that whatever Vegas came out with, it will consider the revivification of a dying school system. More education means less drug use and isn’t that what the police were trying to stop at EDC?

Just Say 'No'!

Lastly, the outrageous attire of today’s raver is leaving most adults in a state of cardiac arrest. I’m not sure why either because it was those same adults that began the topless, drug-addled trends in the 60s and 70s. The bare-chested look will most likely never die, but does it have to be done with neon pink, furry, cave-girl boots? Newsflash!!:It’s not as cute as you think. Thank you and please come again! Disclaimer: The verbal foible (Electric not Electronic Daisy Carnival) in the podcast was unintentional. It was a trial getting the podcast to post so  rather than mess with a good thing I left it. Please forgive!  <8′-(

Beating the Heat!

It’s really heating up out there in the valley! This week’s post is about the rising temperatures in the area and how to keep cool Las Vegas.
Beginning with the notion that water is so vital to our systems as human beings. It is the most important nutrients that our body needs to survive. Signs we need to keep up with the ever so high temperatures of Las Vegas whether we are walking the dog, walking into a store and doing basic thinks around there are signs of hydration. Such as the Lack of saliva or dry mouth, Rapid heart beat and feeling signs of fatigue. So when feeling that on the day of a heatwave drinking throughout the day water preferably 5-6 glasses a day. This will give water a chance to get inside cells and begin their job of temperature regulation in the body. Drinking that entire water bottle quickly just before you go outside will not be as effective and may give you an upset stomach versus it actually helping you to stay hydrated. There are also veggies that have water, too such as cucumber, peppers and WATERmelon!

As staying protective nutritionally, we also need to take note that exposure to the sun can be detrimental and have long term risks involved such as skin cancer and premature age of the skin. Best way to avoid the sun is just not go out. That is obviously not the best way and is not very congruent to what we have to do in our lives. Wearing a simple hat can protect the face as well as wearing SPF creams that are found everywhere from our food store and pharmacies.

So it is very important to keep these facts and tips in the back of our mind when stepping out in the place we live call the desert. Next time don’t forget the lotion!

Only YOU Can Prevent Fourth of July Fires

It’s that time of the year again! Every Fourth of July people gather with family and friends to celebrate the day of our country’s independence. This holiday usually consist of barbeques, fireworks and a few cold ones by the pool. While distracted by the fun, often time people fail to see the dangers that may arise when fire is involved. According to the Green Bay Fire Department, more fires are reported on Independence Day than any other day of the year. If one does not take the proper precautions, it is very easy for a great evening to go wrong. Before hosting a Fourth of July event at your home, make sure that you fulfill each task that is recommended by the experts in the City of Las Vegas. These tasks include: 1. Cleaning your yard: Make sure that weeds are pulled and grass is cut and watered. 2. Take off all dead palm tree fronds. It is known that these burn fast and can spread the fire through wide areas. 3. Always be ready with the hose and/or bucket of water, just in case any small fire breaks out, this can prevent them from spreading and getting larger. 4. Keep all pets inside throughout the evening. 5. Keep all cars and trucks in the garage or safely from the area where fireworks are being lit. Fireworks can also cause harm to people if not used properly. Each year thousands of people are injured while using consumer fireworks. A majority of these injuries happen on the hand or head of victims. While several fire departments report that 10-14 year olds have a higher risk of being injured on this day, everyone should take the time to practice the tips that firefighters encourage firework users to follow. 1. Fireworks should be only be used on a flat, firm surface such as the ground or a driveway. They are illegal on street or sidewalks. 2. Stay away from cars, lawns or anything else that may easily catch fire. 3. Always have an adult present when fireworks are being used. 4. Young children should not be lighting fireworks. 5. After the firework has been used, one should pick up the remains with a shovel, dropped into a bucket of water and left to soak for several hours before being thrown in the trash. The same measures should take place when there is a “dud.” Do not try to relight any fireworks that were not originally able to function properly. 6. Fireworks should never be used inside a house/building. 7. Do not ignite fireworks while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Before partying all afternoon and sitting in front of a beautiful firework show, please take the time to BE SAFE on Fourth of July!

Big Screen & Immigration Issues.

Image: Graur Razvan Ionut / FreeDigitalPhotos.net

Thousands of people migrate to this country to fullfill the American Dream. To offer a better education for their children, to obtain a place of their own and earn more income to survive. In other words, they seek for the opportunities not found in their countries of origin. There are many who accomplish this dream against all odds. Many others live in the shadows to avoid deportation and to be able to bringing food to the table. The anti-immigrant laws destroy the slighest hope of millions of people to come out of that darkness. To reflect this situation, some directors delve into the lives of these people to reflect their perspectives on these issues.

The movie “Under the Same Moon” shows the story of Rosario, played by Mexican actress Kate del Castillo, who works as an illegal domestic worker in Los Angeles and leaves behind her 9-year-old son Carlitos (Adrian Alonso). Upon the death of his caretaker, he embarks on his journey to Los Angeles on his own looking for his mother. Also, the new movie “A Better Life” reflects a hard-working father trying to offer a  better future for his son. In reality, cases like this abound in this country. In some cases, parents have to either migrate to this country without their kids or send their American citizen children to their countries of origin. Silvia, a Mexican immigrant mother who has lived in Las Vegas for a few years, commented on sending her three children to Mexico to avoid having them go through  struggles. “As a parent, it is not easy. Sometimes I question myself why I did it and I regret it. But my goal was to give them a better life with better opportunities, the ones my husband and I didn’t have when we were young.”

Another film that offers a view on immigration issues from a different perspective. This movie is called “Maria Full of Grace.” Maria Alvarez (Catalina Sandino Moreno),  who is 17 years old, risks her freedom and her life to be a drug mule. She walks away from a job as an assembly-line worker at a Colombian flower factory to enter the drug-smuggling world. When some individuals face financial struggles, they have to take the easy way out in order to take care of their needs in some instances. Sonia, a Salvadorean immigrant, shared her perspective on this plot. “I prefer to work as a cleaning lady instead of signing up to that. There are more options to make money without getting in trouble. I guess it’s subjective,” she concluded.

To summarize, these plots  show the reality immigrants confront when searching for improvement and prosperity. It’s inevitable not to shed a tear or two and feeling a lump in my throat when seeing the distress of  the characters. It’s impossible not to empathize with these stories. I would like to conclude with a real life anecdote:  Many years ago, there was an 8-year-old girl who lived with her immigrants parents. In a very humble environment but happy. They always taught her right from wrong. Unfortunately, they faced financial struggles and made a tough decision: Send the little girl to El Salvador to live with her maternal grandparents. The physical distance was not easy for both parts, but a phone line kept them connected. However, that girl understands that parents sometimes make sacrifices.  She grew up and returned to this country 15 years later. This is the story shared by other people who face a cruel reality with the current immigration laws. And movies reflect this more and more!

America’s Kids: They’re Not Alright

As the youth of America continue to consistently fall behind in global rankings of math, science and reading proficiency, many educators wonder what more can be done.  We have revolutionized the way technology is implemented in the classroom and conducted extensive research into how children learn to better refine our educational techniques. So what’s the problem? Why are our children getting progressively worse?  What if the real problem isn’t the schools, what if it’s everything else going on in their lives outside of school.  What if it’s our society that’s holding them back, replacing the act of learning with the act of being entertained, the concepts of hard work and achievement with the concept of gratuitous self-esteem. In George Orwell’s classic novel 1984, the population is deprived of complex thought by a stripped down version of English called Newspeak. Human beings can’t think of an intricate or multifaceted idea and articulate it to one another without the words to describe it.  They exist in a state of perpetual ignorance, deprived of the right to think critically because they have been robbed of the tools to do so. It has frightening similarities to the generation growing up and the “truths” they’re discovering today.  They are trained in a visual culture that has moved away from the nuances of written language into a world of instant gratification and pretty lights.  Their minds are bombarded on a daily basis by advertisements and entertainment that reinforces self-glorification, sex, violence and the idea that striving for “individualism” through consumption is the only thing that matters, since amassing material wealth is what makes one person superior to others. Parents are so terrified of raising a child with low self-esteem or poor body image they have forgotten that confidence grows out of competence, and have skipped the most basic step.  We’re raising a generation that is all too eager to celebrate the fact that they’re so great, without actually doing something even remotely noteworthy.  Meanwhile, they shrink from responsibility and the consequences of their actions and feel threatened by the notion that they should accomplish anything that involves a challenge.

As a society, we have destroyed the language of discourse and engagement and replaced it with catchphrases and product tag lines.  We supplant tangible role models with a revolving door of celebrities, or cheap imitations of real people that pervade our media.  They teach our kids that celebrity, no matter how fleeting or short-lived, is the consummation of success in this world. In light of the mental environment our youth are nurtured in, who could expect them to be anything but self-serving egomaniacs?  They are a reflection of the values we instilled in them.  A petty set of ideals that is the very antithesis of what it once meant to be an American. We are not raising a generation of cultured, intellectually affluent people that can transcend borders and maintain our economic or cultural standards.  We are resigning ourselves to a path of decline and subjugation because we failed to value any aspect of what it means to be a creative, thoughtful society. The future is a globally interdependent economic superstructure that requires a significant amount of knowledge just to understand, let alone participate and succeed in.  Our future is left to the idiotic mob, never looking beyond the lies television feeds them, doomed to fulfill the pathetic role someone else has designed for them.  All followers, no leaders.

Independence Day in Las Vegas

Independence Day at Seastrand Park in 2010

Every year, I’ve always struggled to find things to do for the 4th of July.  Not only because I was under aged (not 21), but I was getting too old to be popping fireworks.  I also have two little brothers that I never seem to have the answer for as to where to take them to see fireworks.  One thing I did know that never gets old is watching fireworks! I took it upon myself to do a little research and find out exactly where the fireworks would be going off around the Las Vegas area. People always said that there were firework displays on The Strip, but I missed them by mere seconds every year. I started off Googling places that had done presentations in previous years, but then I remembered LasVegasWeekly.com.  I check their website to know which clubs to go to on the weekends so I knew they would have what was going on July 4th weekend. Along with the firework displays at Caesar’s Palace, Mandalay Bay, the Las Vegas Hilton, and the Station Casinos, as I described in my podcast below, there will be displays at Lake Las Vegas, Primm Valley Casino Resorts, and Basic High School. Though July 4th firework shows are not as expansive as our New Year’s shows, it is always a wonder to see what kind of rabbits they are going to pull out of the hat.  It’s perfect, free entertainment if you have children, younger siblings, and – who said watching fireworks were for kids, anyway? So take your significant other if you please, grab your blanket, some snacks, and lie out on the grass or drive your vehicle on a hill to sit back and enjoy the Independence Day celebrations.

North Las Vegas’ public safety crisis

In an effort to recoup North Las Vegas’ $30 million dollar plus shortfall, 40 firefighters received pink slips June 13.

Unfortunately, this significant cut is anticipated to be followed by another round of layoffs this October or next July.

The move comes from the 2012 budget approved by North Las Vegas’ city council May 17, in which a total of 250 city positions were identified to be cut.

In talking with firefighters debating the issue and waiting to find out their fate, the story takes an interesting turn. Although perspectives vary in the fire house, one thing is agreed upon.

Following the news closely these days is important, as a discussion to hold a special election for North Las Vegas’ Ward 4 council is scheduled to take place Thursday.

In a one-vote victory, local dentist Wade Wagner defeated incumbent councilman Richard Cherchio 1,831 to 1,830 on June 7.

Several days after the election, the Clark County Elections Department discovered that one invalid vote had been cast in Precinct 4306. When Cherchio called for a recount, Wagner sued.

Thursday’s meeting determines if a new election will be held for the precinct in question. The idea of a new vote in a largely democratic precinct surely doesn’t bode well for republican Wagner.

Wagner is the North Las Vegas’ unions favorite, as Cherchio voted for the public safety budget cuts that led to the firefighter layoffs.

Union members would likely vote for Wagner, as they’ve been known to aggressively campaign against Cherchio. One paid advertisement in particular pictures a burglar breaking into a house, with the message that Cherchio is to blame for the city’s alleged increased crime rate.

It’s also been reported that the majority of Wagner’s campaign funds came from the valley’s public safety unions.

A tough job is ahead for whoever ultimately wins the council seat, as North Las Vegas continues wading in economic turmoil.

The Electric Daisy Carnival coming to Las Vegas was something that had people buzzing for months before it’s arrival. EDC took place here, in Las Vegas, on June 24- 26. The festival, which was kicked out of Los Angeles after a fatality last year, was lengthened to three days this year, as opposed to the usually two. This had many people excited, and many people worried, but the Electric Daisy Carnival took place smoothly, and no fatalities were reported.

Over the three day event, party goers saw popular DJ’s such as David Guetta, Tiesto, Swedish House Mafia, Benny Benassi, and Skrillex. The house was packed Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, with attendance reaching 230,000 people, according to Insomniac Events. According to the LA Weekly, nearly 72,000 people attended on Friday, 80,000 on Saturday, and 63,000 on Sunday. However, the Las Vegas Sun reports higher numbers, with around 75,000 attending on Friday, 85,000 attending Saturday, and 80,000 attending Sunday.

Many people were expecting the worst, but the event appears to have gone good. There were said to have been around sixty arrests, and 330 medical emergencies were also reported. There was one situation, however, involving counterfeit wristbands, and the assistant director of security for EDC. Aaron Hernandez and Pathomrat Kunawongse were both arrested for the scheme, and allegedly admitted to being involved. This was after someone at the printing company came forward, not wanting to take part in the illegal activities.

Overall, the Electric Daisy Carnival went well. Although over 300 medical emergencies may seem a bit high to many, when the amount of people who attended is taken into account, the number is actually quite low. Insomniac released a statement declaring the event a success, and announcing that they have already begun planning next year’s carnival. The statement went on to thank “the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, Clark County Fire Department, and Dr. Dale Carrison and the teams from Medic West, American Medical Response and UMC,” and was posted in a blog by the LA Weekly.

The Electric Daisy Carnival, without a doubt, brought a ton of publicity, as well as tourism to the city. If the event continues to take place without fatalities or issues, it would surely be a good thing for the city. To everyone who attended, I hope you had a fantastic time!

Wanderlei Silva Returns to UFC 132

Urijah Faber versus Dominick Cruz may be the headline event for UFC 132.   But many MMA fans seem to be more enthused for the return of former PRIDE champion and MMA hall-of-famer, Wanderlei Silva, 34.  The UFC has scheduled a co-main between Chris Leben, 30, and Silva on Saturday at the MGM Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Silva is returning to the octagon after a 17 month break due to injuries.  After breaking a rib cage that led to a knee injury Silva has been away from fighting for the UFC. However, he has kept himself busy as a business owner at his gym,  Wand Fight Team, located near Tropicana and the I-15 in Las Vegas.

Silva’s preparation for UFC 132 has included training with The Wand Fight Team and with trainer, Rafael Cordero.  According to MMA Junkie, Cordero has, “Attracted top talent to his King’s MMA school in Southern California. In fact, an old Chute Boxe teammate, former UFC light-heavyweight champ Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, had recently taken refuge there.”

Silva is known for his strength, his heavy hands and intensity he brings to the octagon. With a vast amount of fans and respect he brings to the Las Vegas valley Silva may not be the headlined event at UFC 132, but he will be a featured fighter that MMA fans won’t want to miss.

His opponent, Leben (21-7 MMA, 11-6 UFC), also admitted he has been a long time fan of Silva  (33-10-1 MMA, 3-5 UFC).  ”Believe it or not – I really don’t want to tell him this – but he’s one of the reasons I started. When I very first started fighting, I used to go get bootleg PRIDE videos and watch them, and in some ways try to emulate some of the stuff he did,”  said Leben during a teleconference promoting UFC 132.

Silva showed his appreciation to Wand Fight Team on Monday night when him and his wife, Tea, raffled off ten tickets for UFC 132 that they had bought by themselves.   The tickets were in honor of his gym, members and coaches who train at Wand Fight Team.  He has also arranged a private viewing party that is only offered to his fight team.

“Wanderlei Silva versus Chris Leben is like pouring a truckload of ignited gasoline over a mountain of live dynamite. It is difficult to imagine any result other than a massive explosion,”  state UFC’s article Go Get Some Popcorn: Silva vs. Leben by Michael DiSanto.
